Always time for childhood at Wilmette Community Nursery School

You’re never late for preschool.
That’s what Wilmette mom Gwyn Volk first learned two years ago, when she arrived, breathless, at the door of Wilmette Community Nursery School with her daughters in tow.
“It was really delightful,” Volk remembered Oct. 24. “I’d be all stressed out, driving the kids to school. Sometimes I’d be late, but they’d always remind me that you’re never late for preschool.”
She wasn’t the first parent to get that comforting news. School director Kerry Russell says it’s a mantra with which teachers and staff at the 53-year-old school repeatedly assure parents and children. In fact, it dovetails comfortably with the school’s philosophy, first enunciated by founder Lee Borre.
That, Russell said Oct. 22, is to pay attention to the hearts of children.
“Our philosophy is that a play-based approach is really the only way to teach children of this age,” she said of the 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds who comprise most of WCNS’s student body.
“Over the years as education trends changed, whether it was No Child Left Behind or Common Core, worrying about how their child would do in school stressed parents out. They worried, ‘Is my child going to be ready for school?’” Russell said.

“Our approach is, ‘Don’t worry about it.’”
